GUEST REVIEWS FOR KARULA SANDS VILLA IN BARRA, MOZAMBIUE
I must admit, although we love Barra & go back there at least every second year, we were very disappointed in the accommodation.
For what we paid, it was a huge let down. The place is very poorly maintained & has so much damage. The floors & built in cupboards has so much water damage! The roofs were leaking, inside the main building as well as on our bed - we slept in the rain numerous times. The poor staff did everything they could to make it better for us, but they can only do so much. They gas stove didn’t work properly. Peter got someone out to try & fix it, but still it didn’t work. The aircon did not make the room cold at all and dripped on our heads almost every night. Again Peter arranged someone to come & fix it, but also wasn’t able to fix it. The house does not have proper cutlery & crockery. There’s no wine glasses, no proper knives, no braai casserole, no gas braai as specified. We ended up braaing on a tiny old wobbly braai. The fans didn’t work, we ended with the kids in our room with the separate fans we brought. The fridge/freezer has seen much better days, and is definitely not enough for a family staying for as long as we did. There’s not enough space to freeze meat, fish & bags of ice. It was really frustrating.
The place unfortunately does not look like the pictures & is not nearly worth the money we paid. We’ve always booked directly with owners & hoped that by booking through an agency it would be reliable & trustworthy, but unfortunately we were extremely disappointed.
The staff, Peter, José, Joanna & Petrus, were extremely helpful & hard working with the limited resources that they have! Peter goes out of his way to help wherever he can!

Overall: Average
The cleaning lady was average, she only worked for about 3 hours per day, never greeted us unless we greeted her and never offered to do anything extra.
We got a huge amount of bug bites after the first night, the caretaker said that it was palm flies and that there was nothing we could do. That was the worst aspect of the house, as we were constantly being bitten throughout the two weeks.
There was no constant flow of warm water when showering and the pool pump was never switched on, however general maintenance that we required was attended to.
The Mosquito nets had many holes in.
The caretaker told our guests that they were not allowed in the estate and we were not made aware of such policy. There was no regulation i.e. stickers etc. as to who is staying in the estate and we were asked to pay to use the bridge almost every time. However, the caretaker told us we would not need to pay to use the bridge.
There was not a single hook to hang towels or anything in the bathrooms, nor any form of wash line to hang wet towels in the sun.
