Abelana Game Reserve is a 15,000ha Big Five game reserve adjacent to the Greater Kruger National Park and the Selati Game Reserve. What sets this unique destination apart is that it is owned by the Mashishimale community. Therefore making a difference and contributing to sustainable tourism, by working with the community to uplift and empower its people while conserving and protecting the wilderness. 

The lodge has excellent leopard, elephant and lion sightings. The rates include 2 daily game drives which are conducted by an excellent guide and tracker. In addition a morning work is offered to guests after breakfast. 

Approximately 500km from Johannesburg, this drive is nothing short of adventure with plenty stops along the way that add to the wanderlust. A route planned out with plenty curio shops, quaint cafes and views that will take your breath away. It’s a 5-hour road trip from Johannesburg that passes in the blink of an eye…

The stylish lodge which is newly built comprises of 20 thatched rooms – all with en-suite facilities,  an outside shower and spacious deck overlooking the river. The rooms are airconditioned with ceiling fans and a mini fridge. 

The fully inclusive lodge offers various dining experiences and are dependent on weather and guest preferences. 

Characterised by breathtakingly beautiful landscapes, the reserve has a 10km stretch of the Selati River - home to hippos and crocodiles that make the Selati River their home and the famed Big Five – elephant, rhino, leopard, lion and buffalo – as well as cheetah and wild dog, which are occasional visitors, to an impressive number of endemic bird species. 

The environmental ethos is to operate with as light a footprint as possible. Abelana Safari Camp uses solar power and gas geysers and no large trees were removed during its construction. The lodge is against single-use plastics and have their own drinking water from an underground aquifer. All waste is separated and removed from the property. Making this destination one with a difference.

Additional activities include bush walks, birding, photography and star gazing.
