Situated between Ladysmith and Winterton, against the backdrop of the majestic Drakensburg Mountains on the Kwa-Zulu Natal Battlefields route, is Spionkop Lodge. Spionkop was the scene of one of the bloodiest and perhaps most futile battles fought during the South African war of 1899-1902. This theatre of war was to bring together three significant characters, namely, Winston Churchill, Louis Botha and Mahatma Ghandi. As the farm is of great historical significance, we specialise in trips to the Battlefields, where you will re-live the events of that fateful battle. Spionkop Lodge comprises the original homestead with 9 well-appointed, full en-suite guest rooms, each with its own verandah looking onto the gardens. The main building houses a small library, lounge with fire place and a sunroom. Guests are offered the choice of full board or self-catering facilities. There are 9 spacious en-suite lodge rooms, each with a small patio and views over the countryside. The 2 self-catering cottages with fireplaces sleep 4 and 5 guests per cottage respectively. The larger cottage, Acacia, has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a small single bedroom. Aloe cottage is ideal for a family of four, with one double bedroom and a smaller twin bedded room. Both cottages have braai facilities. Guests may choose the self-catering option or the fully inclusive rate. The original barn built in 1890, has been converted into a reception area dining room and cosy pub. Added to this, is a small but well equipped Conference Room. Experience the ultimate in relaxation and tranquillity at Spionkop Lodge, lazing at the pool side, watching spectacular sunsets or curled up with a good book on the deck. There is a water hole in front of the deck where one can see view prolific birdlife and amazing birds over the famous Spionkop Battlefield. Due to the diversity of activities which we offer, our guests generally stay three or four nights, arriving as guests and leaving as friends!
