One of the most affordable accommodations in the wider area, Umkumbe certainly does not lack in either comfort or game viewing excellence. With views of the Sand River, Umkumbe is never short of sightings and boasts a high concentration of leopard. Animals roam freely throughout as there are no fences between the Kruger National Park and the private game reserves. The Sand River attracts a plethora of wildlife to its banks on a regular basis. Game drives take place twice a day and are always an exciting adventure. Dinner times are a celebration in the traditional boma under the starry skies. From the chalets, guests can bird watch and soak up the beautiful surroundings. The entire lodge can comfortably accommodate up to 20 people. The Superior Suites each sleep two people in either one king size bed or two single beds. Every suite also has two sleeper couches and an en suite bathroom, which includes a bath and outdoor shower. Two of the suites are inter-leading, making it a good option for families or friends travelling together The Standard Rooms each sleep two people in either one king size bed or two single beds and has an en suite bathroom with a shower only. There are 2 interleading rooms and all chalets face the Sand River. The main area comprises a beautifully decked out pool area overlooking the Sand River, a cosy lounge and pool table. From the comfort of the pool’s sunbeds. guests can spot buffalo, leopard and lion on the banks of the Sand River. The guest chalets are joined by to the main area by a meandering path that cuts through a small lawn area frequented by warthogs and bushbuck. The lodge is unfenced, however, it is safe for children as there is tripwire that aims to keep elephants and larger animals at bay. During winter, the river thins out and dries up, opening up a private view of abundant elephant herds, lion prides and buffaloes that wander the riverbed in front of the lodge. The lodge has highly qualified safari guides who are expert big-cat trackers, photographers and lovers of African wildlife. There are two game drives a day, in the morning and late afternoon. Coffee and sundowner stops are always a highlight of game drives! Bush walks are led by qualified and trained field guides. You will have the opportunity to track wildlife, learn about the surrounding vegetation and how to read the African bush. If you're lucky you will enjoy a few close encounters with large predators.
